Dermatitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the skin. When the skin becomes inflamed it can lead to a red, itchy or painful rash. Dermatitis has many different causes including allergies, irritating substances and even poison oak/ ivy. Generally dermatitis is not serious, however it can be very annoying and uncomfortable. Fortunately, many treatments exist that can alleviate symptoms and help with healing.
WHO IS AT RISK?
We are all at risk of coming into contact with substances that may cause a rash to develop. Certain groups of people are more likely to develop dermatitis than others. Atopic dermatitis or eczema may be more common in people who have a history of allergies or asthma. Activities such as hiking and being outdoors predispose to coming into contact with poison oak/ivy. Contact with metals containing nickel causes a rash in many individuals. Also, certain occupations may involve repeated contact with irritating substances that can lead to an irritant contact dermatitis.
RASH OR DERMATITIS SYMPTOMS
Often dermatitis will cause a red and itchy rash to develop. Sometimes this rash will evolve into blisters that may weep and then crust over. Depending on the cause of dermatitis the rash may be located on different areas of the body.
DIAGNOSIS AND RASH OR DERMATITIS TREATMENT
The cause of dermatitis is determined when your doctor takes a careful medical history and examines the appearance and location of the rash. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Often avoiding irritating substances or allergens is key. A topical steroid cream may be prescribed to help aid with symptoms and speed up healing.
